THE PRACTICAL WARDROBE
Keep the details
with the garment.
A useful fitting starts with measurements. A careful handover starts with a clear list and agreed instructions.
Measure for the intended movement.
Start with the wearer rather than a familiar clothing size. Record chest or bust, waist, hips and height, adding sleeve and inside-leg measurements where relevant. State the unit used and where you took each measurement. Explain if the role involves reaching, kneeling or wearing other layers. Compare these details with the actual garment dimensions; a size label alone does not show how a costume will fit.
Account for every piece.
Before accepting an outfit, ask which parts are included. A collar, cap or waistcoat shown in a picture may be separate. Keep the agreed list with the costume and check it again when packing for return. Record any marks or loose decoration at handover, and agree how a new concern should be reported. Avoid making repairs without first asking the owner.
Give trims their own space.
Lift a garment by supporting its body, rather than pulling a cuff, point or decorative cord. Fastenings and projecting trims can catch on other clothes, so keep pieces separated when moving them. Ask whether the actual item should be hung, laid flat or loosely folded. Use the recommended support and packing materials, especially for a structured collar or a coat with weight in its tails.
Ask before cleaning or altering.
There is no single cleaning method for this collection. Fabric, lining, dye and attached decoration may need different treatment. Follow the instructions supplied for the specific garment and ask before using water, steam, heat or a stain product. With a rental, confirm who is responsible for cleaning. Obtain permission before shortening a hem, changing a fastening or attaching another accessory.
Make the handover clear.
Agree the rental dates, collection or delivery method, packing and return arrangements in writing. Clarify the deposit and how cleaning or damage will be handled. None of these terms is established by sending an inquiry; they belong in the confirmed arrangement for the actual costume.
